The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is investigating the death of a Seatruck seafarer during cargo discharge operations in Liverpool.

The 30-year-old Seatruck Progress crewmember suffered fatal injury following a collision with a lorry at Bootle docks on May 15.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death by careless driving and drug driving, Merseyside police confirmed via social media.

Nautilus International national ferry organiser Micky Smyth said: 'Unfortunately this tragic incident occurred whilst the vessel was being discharged and our thoughts and sympathies are with the seafarer’s family and work colleagues at this sad time.

'The company contacted myself as the Official responsible for members at Seatruck and a full investigation is currently underway regarding the cause of the incident. Once again, this sad incident highlights the dangers that can occur in deck operations on vehicle decks.

Seatruck runs a Dublin-Liverpool service for trailer operators with four midweek sailings per day in each direction.

This is the second investigation MAIB opened on Seatruck in May, following the grounding of Seatruck Performance in Carlingford Lough, shortly after departing from Warrenpoint.

Seatruck Performance is now at Harland & Wolff's Belfast dry dock for repairs.

The vessel was built in Germany in 2012 and joined the Seatruck Precision in 2018 on a twice daily connection between Warrenpoint and Heysham.
