Cruise and cargoship seafarers: have your say in new study into onboard healthcare

5 March 2024

Cruise and cargoship seafarers are being invited to take part in a new study on their experiences of health and access to healthcare while onboard.

Seafarers from both those sectors and HR managers can fill in one of two healthcare questionnaires and put their names forward for online interviews if they wish.

The study is being undertaken by the Seafarers International Research Centre (SIRC). The research will be organised by Professor Helen Sampson in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University and is being funded by the Swedish Mercantile Marine Foundation. Participants in the research will not be paid and any information collected will be kept confidential.

It is hoped the final report will benefit seafarers and employers by offering examples of best practice in healthcare provision and identifying recommendations for improvements where necessary.

On completion of the study, the findings will be published and be publicly accessible online at SIRC's website, as well as in academic journals and conferences.
