Nautilus members serving with Orkney Ferries have suspended their industrial action while consultations take place on a pay and conditions offer that has been tabled in a bid to resolve the long-running dispute.

Following what was described as a ‘productive’ meeting between Orkney Ferries management and representatives from Nautilus, the RMT and Unite unions, members are being recommended to accept a package which will provide:

  • a backdated 1.5% pay increase for the 2017-18 financial year
  • a non-consolidated payment of £650 per employee, to be paid in the April 2018 pay run
  • a 10% pay rise in the 2018/2019 financial year from 1 April 2018
  • a commitment to a pay award of at least RPI in the 2019/2020 financial year, subject to negotiations with the Scottish government
  • a commitment to refining employment terms and conditions over the next calendar year

Nautilus national ferry organiser Micky Smyth welcomed the offer. 'After protracted negotiations, this offer goes a long way to addressing members’ concerns over the lack of parity with maritime professionals serving in similar operations,' he added. 'Whilst it doesn’t resolve the problems, it is a big step in the right direction and enables us to continue our work to end the shortfall in salaries.'
