Nautilus welcomes new Council members and elects new office-holders

7 July 2026

Nautilus International has welcomed newly elected Council members at the first meeting of the Union's new Council following the declaration of the results of the 2026 elections in April.

The 67th Meeting of Council was held on 24-25 June 2026 in a hybrid format at the Delta Hotel, Vlaardingen, Netherlands, bringing together representatives both in person and online to help shape the Union's priorities for the coming period.

One of the first items of business was the election of Council office holders. Council members elected Wilco van Hoboken and Iain MacKenzie as co-chairs of Council, while Ross Cleland was elected vice-chair and Henk Eijkenaar was elected deputy vice-chair.

Council also received updates from the general secretary, Sascha Meijer, and discussed a wide range of issues affecting the Union and its members.

Among the key decisions taken was the approval of the resumption of the Bevis Minter Award as a Nautilus Award, with the National Maritime College of Ireland invited to nominate a cadet for the 2026 award.

Council approved new welfare and digital innovation initiatives for the Nautilus Welfare Fund charity aimed at supporting service delivery and future development at Nautilus Mariners' Park, Council members also praised Welfare Fund staff for achieving full occupancy at Mariners’ Park and for continuing to deliver high standards of service.

The meeting received updates on finance, professional and technical services, legal support, international relations and communications.

The meeting concluded with thanks to outgoing Dutch maritime trade union leader and previous deputy general secretary Marcel van den Broek, recognised for 26 years of service to the former FWZ, Nautilus's branch in the Netherlands, and Nautilus International as a whole.
