Maritime Minister Lord Byron Davies welcomed the opening of a refurbished seafarers' centre at the Port of Immingham, UK, run by QVSR Seafarers Centres (QVSR SC).
'Seafarers are the backbone of international trade and work long shifts – often months at sea away from their loved ones. When coming ashore, havens like the Immingham Seafarers Centre provide them the space to recharge and reconnect with their families. I'm delighted to see the centre will now stay open 24/7 thanks to government funding.'
The refurbishment project – which cost about £200,000, funded mainly via the Department for Transport in partnership with the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) – sees the Immingham Seafarers Centre modernised to the highest standards among seafarer welfare facilities in Europe.
The funding was agreed as part of the UK government's commitment to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, which seeks to improve and develop maritime welfare services across the world.
CEO of QVSR SC Alexander Campbell said: 'QVSR is fully committed to driving forward with a programme of improvements that will see our seafarers centres here in the UK amongst the very best in the world.'
