Maritime charity Sailors’ Society has opened registrations for its 2024 Cadet Conferences, which focus on wellbeing skills for future seafarers.
The conference for the UK and Europe region will take place online on 6 November. It will aim to provide new seafarers with the wellness skills they will need for their career in a virtual conference centre, with interactive sessions, practical advice, and presentations from key regional and global industry leaders and influencers.
Topics covered will include how to handle bullying and harassment, and developing skills to build onboard and ship-to-shore relationships.

Q: I've heard that Nautilus International has negotiated a pay increase for the officers who work at the company which is sponsoring my cadetship. Would this pay rise apply to me during my cadetship, as well as them?
A: When Nautilus has a signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with a company, our industrial organisers conduct negotiations on a regular basis to ensure our members there have the best pay and conditions possible. This is some of our most important work and can help you to keep your purchasing power in times of high inflation.
As a cadet, the situation is a bit more complicated. Cadets are usually not covered by these pay negotiations, but in some cases they are. In addition, there are some sponsoring companies where cadets are not officially considered during the negotiations, but where the company tends to apply the pay rises to its cadets afterwards anyway.
If you would like to know whether you are receiving a pay rise, please reach out to your sponsor and ask them.
Also, remember that even if you aren't receiving these pay increases while you are a cadet, after you qualify as an officer and begin work you are likely to be covered under the CBA and will receive the money!
It's important to keep up your membership with Nautilus at this point, as the more members we have at a company (especially active members), the greater leverage we have during negotiations with its representatives to improve your pay and conditions.
