This is a fantastic opportunity for a marine engineering professional to re-focus their career and take on an inspector position with our essential organisation.

You’ll be supported through a Specialist Training Programme (STP) to gain the skills and expertise to become a safety inspector. You will enrol on the STP and undertake a combination of study, practical experience and a final assessment, ensuring you are equipped to operate at the forefront of your specialist area.

What’s more, with flexible working options, a strong benefits package and the opportunity to refocus your career in a role that combines challenge, responsibility and purpose, this is the perfect chance to build on your marine engineering experience in a new way.

The Role

As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will use your specialist maritime engineering expertise to help regulate the UK’s offshore energy sector.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will assess offshore safety cases and provide expert technical judgement on areas including hull structure and stability, watertight integrity, ballast and bilge systems, mooring and dynamic positioning systems, and cargo and offloading operations.

Alongside this, you will engage with industry bodies, stakeholders and technical committees to help shape benchmark standards for the design and operation of floating offshore installations.

Additionally, you will:

- Carry out onshore and offshore inspections
- Investigate incidents, complaints and technical failures relating to maritime integrity
- Prepare technical reports and expert evidence for legal proceedings
- Provide specialist health and safety advice across HSE and the offshore industry
- Assess systems relating to hull stability, ballast, mooring and offshore operations
- Support enforcement activities where risks or non-compliance are identified

About You

To be considered as a Specialist Inspector, you will need:

- To be a qualified marine engineer with a STCW Certificate of Competency as a Chief Engineer Unlimited, or a degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent qualifications with demonstrable experience as a marine engineer
- Experience in one or more areas involving the design, construction, integrity management, and operation of floating offshore installations, support vessels, and their marine plant and equipment
- Expert-level knowledge on the operation of marine systems
- Knowledge and understanding of design principles and safety levels involved in the design of various marine systems for floating offshore installations
- Knowledge and understanding of major accident hazards and control measures for floating offshore installations and mobile offshore units
- An understanding of relevant codes & standards from International Standards Organization (ISO), International Maritime Organization (IMO), American Petroleum Institute (API) and Classification Societies
- Familiarity with basic principles of risk management and risk assessment tools
- To be a Chartered Engineer with a corporate membership of an appropriate professional institution (IMarEST or RINA) or have the qualifications to be able to achieve chartered status
- A full, valid driving licence (unless reasonable adjustments can be made in line with the Equality Act 2010)

You must be able to satisfy the OEUK approved offshore medical & OPITO approved survival training requirements (BOSIET/MIST).

Travel and Working Patterns

You will be required to spend periods of time offshore, including overnight stays. This usually includes working outside of normal core working hours, early check-ins and late returns from offshore inspections.

You will travel from Aberdeen by helicopter or marine access to offshore installations, and floating production and non-production installations, usually around 8 times per year and for anything from one to four days at a time. From time to time, you may be expected to undertake unplanned visits offshore at relatively short notice, including weekends.

Regular travel to Aberdeen and other HSE offices for training and meetings will also be required, and this can require overnight stays.

The closing date for this role is 1st June 2026.

Other organisations may call this role Marine Engineering Consultant, Offshore Safety Advisor, Marine Engineering Specialist, or Offshore H&S Advisor.
