Seafarer citizens advice line service strengthened

31 July 2025

The UK's only dedicated Citizens Advice service for seafarers and their families – the Seafarers Advice and Information Line (SAIL) – has received a £30,000 boost from maritime charity Trinity House.

The grant will enable SAIL, which is operated by Citizens Advice Greenwich, to expand its team with a new part-time adviser. The service is seeing growing demand for support with debt, benefits, and housing issues – areas that make up over 60% of SAIL's caseload.

Last year, the service assisted 1,140 clients with more than 5,000 problems, securing over £1.4 million in financial assistance. Trinity House joins existing funders The Seafarers' Charity, Seafarers Hospital Society, and Greenwich Hospital.

CEO of Citizens Advice Greenwich Emma Knight welcomed the grant, saying it would 'make a huge difference' to the lives of seafarers and their families.

SAIL's advice is quality-assured and FCA-registered for full debt support.
