Leader of the inland waterways
Exploring Rolt's Landscapes, by Joseph Boughey
In this series of linked essays, historian Joseph Boughey details the life and works of a renowned figure in British inland waterway history − Lionel Thomas Caswell Rolt.
Rolt's own book Narrow Boat and its 'perceived impending losses of a delicate world' prompted a national campaign to save the UK's waterways. He then helped set up the Inland Waterways Association in the 1940s, but was later expelled over a divide with other founders.
Telling Rolt's story, Boughey looks at the campaigner's concept of 'scenically valued landscapes', and explores the rich history of travel and crafts along British canals up to the 1950s.
