Regulations

With the forthcoming introduction of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 regulations, we're forming MLC compliant collective bargaining agreements (CBA) with yacht owners/companies. These CBAs will provide the necessary benefits to crews whilst protecting employers who comply - so it will be in employers' interest to align with this agreement.

Nautilus has been discussing with owners and the MCA the best way of applying MLC requirements to large yachts – especially regarding accommodation in those between the 200 to 500gt range.

Our priority at all times is the welfare of the crew and to ensure that no exemptions to the general principles in the MLC are granted to the large yacht sector.

The three crucial areas which will be regulated by the MLC are:

  • employment contracts
  • accomodation
  • social security

Under the MLC, employers will be open to inspections of their vessels via flag states and they will have to comply with hours of work, crew accommodation, pay rates, repatriation conditions and more. Captains will need certificate protection, protection against criminalisation, and worldwide legal protection - all of which Nautilus can provide.

We aim to ensure crews have decent contracts of employment that provide adequate terms and conditions, and we will assist employers by ensuring they operate under MLC compliant regulations. So if you aren't already, become a Nautilus International member now!
